Player Resources

Defiance FC is proud to provide our players, families and staff with access to valuable services from our community partners who have made their professional expertise available to the club.

Guy Johnson - College Admissions and Financial Strategy Consultant: Guy has been working on issues related to college admissions and financial aid since the 1990s. He is a graduate of Amherst College and spent roughly seven years working in the college admissions office in various capacities, including two years as an associate dean of admissions. While earning his law degree from the University of California Berkeley School of Law, he served as a member of the law school's admissions committee. He also co-designed and administered the application process for the school's flagship journal, the California Law Review. For more than two decades, Guy has advised state and federal agencies on legal issues pertaining to college admissions and student retention and given numerous presentations to students and parents on financial aid, scholarships, and the college admissions process. Guy's favorite MLS club is LAFC. He also follows Liverpool and the Colombian national team.

On Defiance: "I believe in Defiance FC's innovative approach to bridging the worlds of sport and social impact and the organization's mission - to broaden opportunities for underserved youth and open pathways to college and career success."

Guy provides pro-bono college admissions and financial strategy consulting to Defiance FC players and families, helping them navigate the college application process, identify sources of funding, and create a plan for their academic and professional futures.

Dr. Diego Quiros - Player Wellness and Mental Health Physician: Diego was born in the D.C. area. He is a proud bilingual first-generation immigrant and has worked with young people his entire life. After a bit of a winding road professionally, his work led him to a career in medicine, specifically psychiatry, where he works with children and adults of all ages, though he has a particular affinity for working with adolescents, college-aged young adults, athletes, and early career-professionals. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and received his medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. He completed his residency at the University of Washington, and completed a fellowship in adolescent psychiatry at the Cambridge Health Alliance (Harvard Medical School) in Cambridge, MA, where one of his projects included researching optimal models for making sports, particularly soccer, more inclusive. Diego is currently in private practice and is involved in mentoring and teaching both medical students and residents.

On Defiance: “I am a die-hard sports fan, but futbol has always been my number one love. To me, apart from the obvious social benefits of working as a team and creating community, sports has always been a vehicle through which we can garner opportunities for self-growth. As a youth player, I was fortunate to play for the great coach Guy Fraiture while at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, MD. Coach Fraiture’s lessons have been, and continue to be, crucial guideposts in my life. I was also honored to have been part of Washington Latin Public Charter School’s coaching staff for their first ever varsity soccer team. Defiance FC represents everything I envision for the future of sports and I am thrilled to join this incredible movement and finally have the opportunity to meld my two passions together for the betterment of our community.”

Dr. Quiros provides pro-bono mental health consultations to Defiance FC players and staff, as well as guidance and resources on player wellness to improve communication, address individual challenges, and underscore the importance of safeguarding the mental health of our athletes, coaches, and club personnel.
